Mama's Eyes

We went out to the dune in the forest behind her house to bury the spheres.

There was no idea for an exhibition in it. Kasia has been making them for years — stoneware fired at 1220°C, her own clay body, engobes and oxides. The surface comes out of the kiln as if it had been through erosion: craters, abrasions, the mark of fire. We simply wanted to see what the sand would do to them.

When I started digging them out, the sand slid away and left a ridge around them. The sphere sat in that hollow as if in an eye socket. Kasia saw eyes in them — the eyes of planets, the eyes of the earth. Just eyes. Hence the title.

At Bracka we are showing only the spheres. Three diameters: 40, 34 and 25 cm. Each is unique — the forms take weeks to make, and the 1220°C firing is irreversible; not all of them survive it. They have no numbers. They are like things dug out of the ground — those aren't numbered either.

The spheres returned to the earth they are made of, and came back from it as a gaze. That is all I have to add — the rest is in them.
